When buying vacuum flask water bottle, most people know that we should buy 304 stainless steel vacuum flask rather than 201 s/s material. But do you know what difference between 304 s/s and 201 s/s on vacuum flask?
Generally, insulated water bottle are made of 201, 202 and 304 stainless steel. The two most common types are 304 and 201 stainless steel. Their chemical composition is different. The nickel content of 201 is about 0.8%, and the chromium content is about 13%; In physical performance, 304 s/s has higher corrosion resistant, not easy to rust, the tenacity and fatigue resistance is good. The nickel content of 304 s/s is above 8%, and the chromium content is above 18%. So we also call SUS 304 s/s as 18/8 stainless steel.
Different chemical composition of 304 s/s and 201 s/s:
The corrosion resistance of stainless steel decreases with the increase of carbon content. Therefore, the carbon content of most stainless steels is low, up to 1.2%, and Wc (carbon content) of some steels is even lower than 0.03% (e.g. 00Cr 1 2). The main alloy element in stainless steel is Cr (chromium). Only when the content of Cr reaches a certain value, the corrosion resistance of steel can be achieved. Therefore, the content of Cr (chromium) in stainless steel is at least 10.5%.
The manganese content of 201 is high, which make surface with dark light. High manganese leads to gathers rust easily. The reason why 304 s/s not easy to rust is the formation of chromium-rich oxides on the surface of steel body can protect the steel body, thus achieving the effect of healthy drinking water. 201 stainless steel belongs to high manganese stainless steel, which has higher hardness, higher carbon and lower nickel than 304.
304 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance:
The fundamentally different between 201 and 304 s/s is the main elements of them. The result indicates that the corrosion resistance and stamping performance of 304 stainless steel are much better than 201. Usually, we use 304 s/s in a complicated environment where the strong corrosion resistance is required. While we use 201 s/s in places where the environmental and s/s quality requirements are not very high.
The tenacity of 304 s/s is better than 201 s/s:
201 stainless steel comparatively harder than 304, so it tends to crack more easily. As 304 s/s contains more nickel elements, it doesn’t rust very easily, and it was more resilient, especially for alternating stress of fatigue resistance is very outstanding.
Because of the good corrosion resistance and tenacity of 304 insulated water bottle. Its quality is better than 201 s/s bottle. And 304 is oversea imported stainless steel plate, 201 is China domestic stainless steel plate. It’s natural that price of 304 s/s will be more expensive.
In addition, when we judging the material of vacuum flask, we should get out of a misunderstanding that the “stainless” of stainless steel water bottle, which is not absolutely rusty, but relatively under certain conditions. If consumers use it improperly. For example, use insulated bottle for drink tea, coffee or milk etc, they will rust naturally if they use them in environments or conditions beyond their corrosion resistance.
